Shannon Rovers GAA x The Shane MacGowan Tour

Shannon Rovers GAA are delighted to introduce our new Shane MacGowan Tour jerseys. Drawing inspiration from the recently launched Shane MacGowan Tour, the jerseys capture many of the elements associated with the tour and its iconic landmarks.

One of the stops on the ‘Unravelling’ tour is the Shannon Rovers GAA clubhouse, further strengthening the special connection between the tour and our club. Following the success of our previous Shane MacGowan jerseys, we are proud to launch this new set to coincide with the tour.

Each jersey features unique sketches and doodles drawn by Shane himself. Each of these doodles are taken from Shane's book 'The Eternal Buzz and the Crock of Gold' along with selected writings that reference our local area here in North Tipperary which have never been seen before.

We are extremely proud of the enduring link between our club and Shane through his great-grandfather, John Lynch, who served as the first chairman of our long-established club.

Every place on the Unravelling Shane MacGowan Tour was dear to Shane as a child and remained so for all of his life. Each place to him meant home. The doodles and writings on the Unravelling Shane tour shirt reflect his love of this Lough Derg area that he immortalised in the songThe Broad Majestic Shannon. On the shirts he has drawn, Kilbarron, Borrisokane, Tipperary and the hurley. All the writings featured are his writings of the old people of Carney and all he knew and loved there. On the sleeve of one of the shirts is a drawing of our Uncle John so beloved by Shane. With the shirt you are getting a real glimpse into what lay at Shane’s core and the root of many of his lyrics.

We released our first jerseys in December 2023 and they proved to be a big hit. These Shannon Rovers Commemorative Jerseys are a tribute to a legendary figure and a proud son of our GAA club. Crafted with passion and precision by O'Reilly sports, this exclusive jersey pays homage to the iconic frontman of The Pogues, celebrating the spirit of both music and GAA. The jerseys come in black, red and white and are all available within our store for purchase.

Shannon Rovers meant a lot to Shane and fittingly, a significant part of the offertory at his funeral was a Tipperary flag, a sliotar and a Shannon Rovers jersey.  Shane’s great-grandfather John Lynch was indeed the first chairman of the club. It is particularly fitting for John Lynch to feature on our commemorative jersey alongside Shane whose genius with words and music has left a lasting legacy that will endure worldwide for many generations to come.

Shane loved hearing stories of John Lynch and his affiliation with Shannon Rovers GAA and was very proud of his connections.

Shannon Rovers GAA would like to thank the MacGowan family for allowing us to produce such a fantastic tribute to Shane and his work.

The MacGowan family have provided us with this iconic image of Shane for use on our commemorative jersey along with the addition of Shane's signature which features on the back.

The Broad Majestic Shannon

Each of our club jerseys contain the powerful and evocative lyrics of one of Shane’s most loved compositions “The Broad Majestic Shannon”. This song is a particular favourite among locals as it reminisces romantically and poignantly about times spent in the area. A number of local places are mentioned including the Cross of Finnoe, Glenaveigh and of course the nearby River Shannon.

The song contains some of Shane’s most memorable lines which have been incorporated beautifully into the commemorative jersey, “I sat for a while by a gap in the wall, found a rusty tin can and an old hurley ball, heard the cards being dealt and the rosary called and a fiddle playing Sean Dún na nGall” -  recounting how Shane and his sister Siobhan would sit at a favourite spot on the farm and hear the distant sounds of the rosary and music coming from the renowned homestead.

John Lynch

John Lynch, (top left) was the great-grandfather of Shane MacGowan and was a founding member and the first chairman of Shannon Rovers GAA club.

Originally founded in 1898, 2023 marked the 125th anniversary of the formation of the original Shannon Rovers club.

John Lynch is featured on the sleeve of each of the commemorative jerseys, his portrait hangs proudly in the parlour of Shane's home.

Hanging in the clubhouse for a number of years, this photo is inspired by lyrics within the song "The Broad Majestic Shannon" and is featured on the jersey.
